Our Story

Joe and Maggie met at Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Virginia as sophomores in 2010. If you ask Maggie, it all began in gym class where their natural athleticism and inherent chemistry made them a formidable team in whatever made-up sport they happened to be playing that day. However, according to Joe, the magic really started in Driver’s Ed the semester before where he couldn’t help but notice her radiant smile from across the room. Following their formal introduction in gym class, the next several months were filled with many 8th period study hall hangouts, trips to Rita’s Italian ice after school, and a school-sponsored 5K.

On May 23, 2011, after weeks of second-guessing himself and dozens of times running through the lines in his head, Joe finally mustered up the courage to ask Maggie out near the end of 8th period. “What?” she replied, having not heard him. Joe, having blacked out while asking this, took a second to regroup before processing that the appropriate course of action was to repeat the question, this time a bit louder over all of the surrounding noise. Lucky for him, the answer was a resounding yes, and so their relationship formally began with an agreement to go see Thor at Tyson’s Corner that weekend.

Their relationship continued for two and a half years while they finished high school, attending such events as the Fairfax Fair, football games, and of course, several school dances. An agreement was made ahead of time, however, to split up at the beginning of college—several thousand miles apart—with the understanding that the door would be open in the future if they were still interested.

Three years after the initial breakup, they were indeed still interested. A summer trip for Joe out to San Diego marked the informal beginning of their paths back to each other, and it was undeniably love at second sight, as the saying goes. With Joe’s sister Rachel getting married, and Maggie agreeing (or rather, inviting herself) to be Joe’s date, they found themselves together again in Northern Virginia on September 23, 2016. Maggie this time did the honors of asking Joe out, to which he ecstatically agreed.

For the two years following, the couple dated long distance, making several trips to see each other in California and Alabama, as well as places such as Nashville and Atlanta for fun weekend getaways. Eventually, with Joe deciding to attend grad school at UT Austin and Maggie having always wanted to move to Texas, all signs pointed to the Lone Star State and Joe and Maggie relocated to Austin in August of 2018. They’ve lived together there happily ever since with their loving dog, Hank Jr.

After years and years of bliss, Joe decided to propose, and plans were made for March 27, 2021. After scouting out a picturesque spot at Zilker Botanical Gardens with his groomsman Andrew, Joe asked Maggie if she would join him on a date the following Saturday. He planned a delicious brunch at Odd Duck, followed by a walk around the botanical gardens which eventually led them out over stepping stones to a small island within a koi pond. Just as it had happened years before, Joe blacked out, notably forgetting every line that he had spent so long preparing. Despite this, Maggie said yes yet again, and the rest is history.

Christine Galloway

Christine is one of Maggie’s oldest friends (they met in third grade!) and shares her Texas roots. Now she's living it up in San Francisco and exploring all the nature the West Coast has to offer. We can't wait to celebrate with her!

Emily Kelly

Emily and Maggie became friends on their very long middle school bus route and have been close ever since! Their memories together span the globe, from Charlottesville to Kathmandu - now she’ll join Maggie on her biggest adventure yet!

Groomsmen

Austin Stahle

Austin is Joe’s best man and oldest friend, their friendship dating back to 1999. Their early days were spent at the pool or getting slurpees together, which later turned into playing their guitars or arguing about anything and everything. Despite the distance between them, the love has always remained.

Kyle Angelotti

Kyle and Joe met in 7th grade algebra and quickly became close friends due to their love of football and beer (or did that come later?). Countless nights spent playing ping pong and March Madness 2001 forged a bond that has remained strong despite being thousands of miles apart.

David Neuberger

David and Joe met in high school where they played basketball together. Their friendship really blossomed at Alabama (with David becoming a mainstay at Nissen family vacations) and they have been close ever since. Notably, they are the proud owners of a 1,700 day snap streak, which may be a world record.

Matt Speakman

Matt and Joe were roommates at Alabama for 3 wonderful years where they connected over their similar senses of humor and love for Quick Grill’s cheese fries. They spent their days playing 2K or Madden and their nights hosting Tuscaloosa’s best pregames. A testament to their compatibility, they willingly shared a bathroom simply to avoid having to walk a few more feet to the other one.

Kevin Paul

Kevin and Joe met at Alabama at an AKPsi event and later on the basketball courts at the Rec. A close friendship quickly followed which saw them host a tailgate together, attend dozens of women's basketball games, and make their way to all of Tuscaloosa’s famous barbecue spots. Kevin, having recently relocated to Austin, finally gives Joe a fellow fan to watch games with.

Jack Brown

Jack and Joe met in 7th grade history class and made memories throughout middle and high school playing sports together. After reuniting in Austin, they spent two years together as roommates grilling meats and watching low budget horror movies. Always good for an interesting night, Jack has spearheaded efforts to go see events like WWE Raw and Monster Jam whenever they happen to be in town.

Andrew Allan

Andrew and Joe met at the University of Texas where they quickly bonded over their disdain for postgraduate education, their similar tastes in music, and their love of Varsity Pizza’s lunch buffet (RIP). Post-graduation, they both began work as mechanical engineers at the same company here in Austin where their coworkers often joke about how similar they are.

Gift Registry

Your company is all that we could wish for on our special day, but if you would like to honor us with a gift, we are registered at Williams-Sonoma, Inc.
